EUROPE DAY 2018
Celebrate peace and unity throughout the European Union
On May 14th, 2017, groups in locations all over the country came together to host picnics and other events to celebrate Europe Day.
This united celebration, which was proposed and coordinated by Greenwich for Europe, was a great success but unfortunately many groups found themselves unable to take part due to the snap General Election taking up all of their time.
As a result, we want to make our Europe Day celebrations bigger and better than ever before. The details are still being finalised for the 2018 series of events - please stay tuned to this page for further information coming soon.
What is Europe Day?
To quote the European Union website:
"Europe Day, held on 9 May every year, celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historical 'Schuman declaration'. At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable.
His vision was to create a European institution that would pool and manage coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body was signed just under a year later. Schuman's proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union."

What are the dates and plans for this year?
The exact date for the coordinated series of events has yet to be decided, but it is will be one of the weekends either side of May 9th. We aim to decide on the exact date ASAP.
I would like to take part. What now?
The coordinated series of events are not managed by us, we are only proposing them as a sign of unity.
If you are interested in being part of the day, have a suggestion for an event, or have any questions, then please get in contact with us using the email address below so what we can provide more information.
